Preparing for the 2024 Laidlaw Scholars Conference

We’re excited to welcome you to the 2024 Laidlaw Scholars Conference! For most scholars, this will be your first conference and proper preparation will ensure you get the most out of the experience. Here’s everything you need to know to arrive ready, engaged, and equipped to make the most of the weekend.

Campus Access

There is currently enhanced security in place on both campuses, and you will need to pass through security to enter campus.

Please bring along a photo ID (state ID, driver's license, or passport), as this will be required to enter campus buildings.

You should also receive two QR codes by email, which you will need to enter Columbia's campus. One code is for Saturday, and one is for Sunday. The QR code will be requested by the security desk outside of Faculty House, along with your physical photo ID. If you have not received these QR codes by Thursday, November 7th, please inform your Laidlaw Programme Manager as soon as possible.

Note: Access to Barnard’s campus only requires a photo ID—no QR code is needed.

Know the Theme: "Curiosity: Beyond Assumptions, Towards Understanding"

Curiosity is the driving force behind testing new paths, asking difficult questions, and embracing the unexpected. It compels us to leave cynicism and judgment behind, opening our minds and hearts to new ways of thinking and doing.

By questioning why things are the way they are and considering what if there is a different way, we cultivate the courage to find out and explore. Through curiosity, we challenge the status quo and seek solutions to the world's most pressing problems, leading with integrity and purpose.

This year’s theme will guide our discussions and activities throughout the weekend. Reflect on how curiosity plays a role in your leadership journey and how challenging assumptions can lead to new perspectives and solutions. Come ready to explore what this theme means to you and how you can apply it to your work, both during the conference and beyond.

Download the Event App

Download the event app to your phone so that you can easily view the agenda and any other event information while you are at the conference.

You can also search for 'Swoogo' in the store and download the app 'Attendee Mobile'.

Search for 'Laidlaw' in the app to find the event.

Review the Agenda

Take time to review the conference agenda in advance so you know which sessions are happening and when. Make note of the panel discussions that interest you most. Being familiar with the schedule will help you stay organised and ensure you don’t miss anything important.

Prepare for Networking

Networking is a big part of the Laidlaw Scholars Conference. Think about how you can make the most of this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, scholars from other universities, and leaders in various fields.

Here are some tips to prepare for networking:

  • Introduce yourself confidently: Practice a short introduction to share who you are and what you’re passionate about.
  • Prepare conversation starters: Think about topics or questions you can ask others, such as their experiences with Leadership-in-Action projects or their research interests.
  • Set goals: Identify a few people or sessions you’d particularly like to engage with during the conference.

Remember, networking is about building meaningful connections, so don’t hesitate to start conversations with new people.

Be Ready to Engage

While the conference is packed with exciting sessions and learning opportunities, it’s also important to have fun and enjoy the experience! This is a time to connect with fellow scholars, explore new ideas, and celebrate your journey as a Laidlaw Scholar. Embrace the chance to socialise, relax, and make meaningful connections during the gala dinner, social activities, and informal conversations throughout the weekend.

The conference is not just about learning; it’s about building memories, friendships, and networks that will last beyond this event. Be open to spontaneous conversations, laugh with new friends, and don’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve come!

Remember: This is your time to shine and make the most of the opportunities in front of you—so dive in with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a sense of fun!
